8/6/2008You may have heard about the Community Kit for SharePoint (aka "CKS") – it's a set of templates, Web Parts, tools and source code that allows you to create community driven web sites and content on top of SharePoint Products and Technologies. One of the most popular components of the CKS is the CKS:EBE or Enhanced Blog Edition. You have seen many different SharePoint blogs using this template.
Another great add-on is the CKS User Group Edition. This is a SharePoint site template (.stp) that allows you to create a site already tuned to help with common tasks and themes related to technology User Groups. User Groups are a really positive force in the community and SharePoint is here to help. You can download the .stp file here: http://www.codeplex.com/Release/ProjectReleases.aspx?ProjectName=CKS&ReleaseId=1926.
Once you have downloaded the .stp file you need to upload it to your Site Templates Gallery. Follow the simple set of instructions below to get it running for yourself on a sub-site of your existing SharePoint site collection.
1. After downloading the SharePoint site template to your computer you need to add the .stp file to your Site Templates Gallery in the Site Settings area of your SharePoint Site under the Galleries heading. Navigate to Site Actions > Site Settings > Site templates.
2. Next you need to select the Upload Document link of your Site Template Gallery.
3. A new screen will appear which will allow you to browse and upload a template. Click the Browse button then locate the file you downloaded in step Next click Open and then OK. This will upload your file. Click through and save all the description and additional meta data about the file.
4. Now navigate to Site Actions > Create > Sites and Workspaces > type a title, description and path to your site and then click on the Custom tab for the template selection. Select your security options and then click Create. This will take several moments and then your new CKSUGE site will be displayed!
5. Success! Click the image below to see the template live and in action.

Problem: Shared SharePoint hosting is in general not compatible with third party software. There are a variety of reasons but the two biggest concerns our customers have had over the years relate to (1) ability to migrate content and custom functionality between SharePoint versions (2) developer availability to keep current with the Microsoft patch cycle. With WSS 3.0 and MOSS 2007 the SharePoint SDK and your ability to use SharePoint as a Platform for launching other services and software, in fact Microsoft support of this model is implicit.
Our solution: Separate shared hosting environments for 3rd party application hosting. While we offer economical shared hosting for OTB (out of the box) functionality of WSS 3.0, we can now offer shared hosting for customers who have requirements for third party SharePoint add-in software. By separating the hosting environments we can tune security and availability to meet the requirements for non-standard SharePoint add-ins.
Affordability: Since we have to maintain a separate solution stack (think hardware, firewall, SQL databases, software licensing, support) keeping this service affordable for our customers is very important to us. In many circumstances we are able to keep the service affordable by keeping the additional per month hosting cost under $100 USD. It is important to keep in mind that 3rd party software has additional licensing and support costs beyond what we license through Microsoft's SPLA program.
Demo of a solution we are currently providing: We are happy to support many companies who are choosing to go paperless with SharePoint (the amount of money you can save with a SharePoint implementation on printing and postage is huge). One of the third party solutions we are currently providing is a product that enables direct communication between your hosted SharePoint sites and document scanners in your offices. This allows you to scan documents directly into SharePoint document libraries and build the contents of those documents on the fly to a final product as a TIF, PDF or MDI file format. The product is called Scanner Enabler 2007 Windows SharePoint Services Edition by Dark Blue Duck.

How to get in touch with us about this software or any other: You can contact us through our website (http://www.sharepointhosting.com/contact_us.asp) - make sure to mention that you are looking for hosting for third party SharePoint add-ins.

Questions/Comments/Suggestions? Send an e-mail to supportteam at sharepointhosting dot com 4/15/2007Many businesses use SharePoint sites to allow teams to better manage their documents, project Gantt charts, issue lists and client deliverables. In our day and age of "always on" connectivity we still can experience some downtime, offline line, where our Internet access is down on a plane, on the road, or wherever. While you can take a significant amount of your SharePoint data offline today with the Microsoft Office 2007 suite of products, there are some limitations. A company named Colligo Networks has stepped in to address the needs of Offline SharePoint users with a great free product that allows you to take your SharePoint sites, lists, libraries and information offline and access it all with nearly the identical browser interface you already know how to use.
While the site sync is one way with their free product they do have a paid product where off-line changes to your SharePoint site information is seamlessly uploaded to your sites when you reconnect to the Internet. Take a look at the Colligo products if you are a laptop SharePoint user or require access to key SharePoint information offline.

We are all familiar with the Application Templates for Windows SharePoint Services –now we are in for a treat as Microsoft has dedicated to release "Role-Based Templates for SharePoint My Sites"– this means Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) 2007 specific application templates to be used on My Sites. With the Role-Based templates for My Sites managers within organizations that leverage the MOSS platform will be able to use the included dash boards to better understand trends with up to date business data.
According to the SharePoint Products and Technologies Team blog the first two templates will be able available by the end of January, 2007. These first two templates will provide samples targeted for Sales Managers and Controllers/Finance Analytics. Check out this blog post for more details, screenshots and a video - Role Based Templates for SharePoint My Sites. 1/22/2007You are probably thinking to yourself, "Great another SharePoint tutorial resource!" – but not so fast, this time we have something different as announced here on Mike Gannotti's blog. The SharePoint Learning Kit is a SCORM 2004-conformant e-learning delivery and tracking application built as a Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 solution. That means that if you are running a WSS 3.0 or MOSS 2007 server you can deploy the SharePoint Learning Kit on that server so be sure to check it out if you are in the education or e-learning space.
SharePointHosting.com is currently reviewing making the SharePoint Learning kit available for all customers and will have a determination in the next week or two of the feasibility of deployment to our Shared hosting and dedicated environments. Stay tuned! |
